Creating materials from waste produced from the Japanese fishing industry

When in Japan it was evident that there was a huge amount of waste produced within the fishing industry. Going to the fish market I was able to collect a huge amount of waste but predominantly it was fish scales and crabshells that were in vast quantities. Both of these raw materials have incredible qualities and materials found within them, so I wanted to create useable forms of these based on the Japanese culture. My first product was a lacquer created from dipping the object in a collagen based liquid derived completely from fish scales. I also created a ceramic using crabshells which were turned into a calcium oxide.
